Reducing costs in transportation

Posted on 24 March, 2017 at 9:15 Comments comments (0)

Lack of planning, ineffective decision making, and poor visibility in transportation and logistics can cause companies to overpay, miss delivery targets, incur damaged goods, and lose valuable business.

Yet there are economical ways to reduce risk, enhance efficiency, and achieve significant cost reduction.

“When businesses of all sizes manage transportation and shipping costs effectively, they improve financial performance,” says Don Anderson, Vice President of Transportation Services, Tompkins International (Raleigh, NC), a supply chain distribution and operations firm.

“Reduced costs in transportation lead to savings that trickle down to the bottom line. That’s because transportation typically involves bringing production supplies, components, and finished goods into the company or delivering goods to customers, so whenever money can be saved, it goes right to profit.”

FedEx electric vans for Belgium

Posted on 19 March, 2017 at 21:40 Comments comments (0)

FedEx is to introduce all-electric Nissan e-NV200 vehicles for pickups and deliveries in the areas of Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp.

Erik Uljee vice president, ground operations Benelux, said: “When it comes to road network and transport, Belgium is a key player.

“ Our first priority is to reduce overall mileage by optimising routes. We match vehicles to journey based on load volume and route length, and plot the shortest routes. We also apply our logistics expertise to reduce empty miles when vans travel with less than optimal loading. As major cities with important last-mile deliveries, Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels offer the perfect opportunity for the Nissan e-NV200 vans.”

In 2015, FedEx had 447 hybrid vehicles; 1,176 electric vehicles and 55 hydrogen-fueled vehicles globally.

In Belgium, FedEx currently has a total of 150 vehicles and as of this month, five zero-emission all-electric Nissan e-NV200 vans.

“The Nissan e-NV200 vans not only help reduce CO2 emissions, they are also quieter, which is generally a big issue in urban areas,” said Patrick Roedolf, senior manager, Operations, Clearance & Brokerage Benelux, FedEx Express.

Steline transports top spec volvo fm is a dream to drive

Posted on 13 March, 2017 at 21:00 Comments comments (0)

Steline Transport of Dukinfield in Cheshire has taken delivery of a Volvo FM 6×2 tag-axle rigid fitted with a front-mounted Palfinger crane. The truck was supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials, Trafford Park.

Equipped with a Globetrotter LXL cab, which was wrapped by AST Signs of Penrith, the latest addition to the family-run fleet “ticks all the boxes”, according to Mark Bayley – driver and son of the company’s founder and owner Steve Bayley.

“All our heavy trucks are Volvo and for very good reasons,” says Mark. “The reliability is second-to-none, the support we receive from Thomas Hardie Commercials is superb, the fuel efficiency is outstanding and the build quality simply makes Volvo a superior long-term investment.”

The new Volvo FM particularly impresses Mark thanks to fuel returns in the order of 12 mpg and high levels of comfort and manoeuvrability. “We opted for the Volvo Dynamic Steering and it’s proved to be an inspired decision,” explains Mark. “I can manoeuvre when fully-loaded with the same ease as when driving a car. There’s no question this steering contributes to making my day so much easier than it was previously.”

Inside the Globetrotter LXL cab there’s a single bunk, ample locker space and leather upholstery throughout.

“The driver’s seat with arm rests is air-suspended and heated, so as far as comfort is concerned, this truck is a lovely place in which to work,” states Mark. “The low-down torque, in combination with the I-Shift automated transmission means even when I’m fully-loaded this truck pulls like a train. It’s phenomenal.”

He adds, “The FM is easy and safe to get in and out of regularly, so the truck ideally suits our work. I like Volvo trucks, and I must say this new FM with Dynamic Steering is an absolute dream to drive. Since our first Volvo FL6 in 1987 we’ve had Volvo FL, FH and FM trucks and they’ve always impressed, but this new FM has just raised the bar another notch.”

The 8 metre long flatbed bodywork on the 410hp Volvo FM is by PPS Commercials of Bury in Lancashire. The TH White Group fitted the Palfinger crane, which has a 12-metre reach and 2150kg maximum lift capacity when fully-extended.

“We generally carry lightweight steel fabrications, air conditioning units and cast concrete so cubic capacity is more important to us than GVW,” declares Mark. “The entire build was arranged through Thomas Hardie Commercials and the outcome is stunning.”

“We provide national coverage, including deliveries into London, so we have had a nearside sensor, left turn audible alert and camera system fitted by Sentinel Systems,” says Mark. “This links directly into the Volvo dash mounted info display screen, as does a roof-mounted camera that monitors the load.”

Strong growth for air cargo

Posted on 1 March, 2017 at 17:20 Comments comments (0)

Global air cargo demand last year was up 3.8 per cent on 2015 – nearly double the average growth rate over the past five years, according to figures from the International Air Transport Association.

Freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometres, increased by 5.3 per cent in 2016.

All regions, with the exception of Latin America, experienced positive freight growth in 2016. Carriers in Europe accounted for almost half of the total annual increase in demand.

European airlines reported a 16.4 per cent year-on-year increase in freight demand in December and a capacity rise of 5.9 per cent. These results helped boost cargo volumes for the 2016 calendar year by 7.6 per cent – the largest increase of all regions, and accounting for almost half of the total global annual increase in freight demand. The seasonally-adjusted growth trend is strong and corresponds with the sustained increase in export orders in Germany and the on-going weakness in the Euro. Capacity in the region increased by 6.7 per cent in the 2016 calendar year.

Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO, said: “In terms of demand, 2016 was a good year for air cargo. That was boosted by solid year-end performance. Looking ahead, strong export orders are good news. But there are headwinds. The most significant is stagnant world trade which also faces the risk of protectionist measures. Governments must not forget that trade is a powerful tool for growth and prosperity.

“The air cargo industry must also improve its competitiveness. We know that the way forward is defined by digital processes which will drive efficiency and improve customer satisfaction. We must use the momentum of renewed demand growth to drive the important innovations of the e-cargo vision.”

Happy Valentine's day

Posted on 14 February, 2017 at 14:15 Comments comments (0)

Wether you’re one of those cynics who thinks Valentine’s Day is just a holiday ginned up by the card, flower, and jewelry industries, or whether you go all in with the hearts and chocolate, you might be surprised to learn how much people spend—and who spends the most.

According to the National Retail Federation, only about 55% of Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day while, it is estimated that Britain will spend £980m for it – a £15m increase on 2015. With last year's Valentine's Day in the UK which saw 518 million pounds spent on gifts such as lingerie and jewellery, 313 million pounds spent on food and drink and 135 million pounds on items such as cards and gift wrapping. However, even though there is a forecast increase in spend, it is only a marginal amount at 1.6 percent, which means retailers will still have to enforce clever tactics to ensure they remain relevant to customers.
